By virtue of the Sacrament of Baptism, Catholics are called to serve those in need through works of mercy, including the corporal works of mercy to bury the dead and comfort those who mourn the loss of a loved one. The bereavement ministry at St. Mary Cathedral endeavors to address areas of spiritual, pastoral, personal, and other needs of grieving family members in our parish following the death of a loved one.
At some point in our lives, we all experience the death of a loved family member or friend. In those times we grieve. Grieving is an individual experience—unique to each of us.
The St. Mary’s Bereavement Ministry formed years ago to support our parish community during those times and to remind the grieving person that they aren’t alone. Members of the ministry can’t walk in the grieving person’s shoes but we can walk with them.

“Why am I involved? Those who have experienced the death of a loved one know that we cannot change that fact. My whole purpose with this ministry is to help the grieving family know that they are part of a larger community that understands and respects their feelings…that they are not alone. Do you see yourself helping do the same?” - Art Taylor
